ALLIGATORS AND CROCODILES

00-00-0000
Biologists believe that alligators and crocodiles have lived in rivers and swamps in many of the warm parts of the world for about 135 million years. They are found today in Asia, Africa, Australia, and North and South America.

Alike but Different

Alligators and crocodiles look alike in many ways. But there are differences, apart from their different names. Ancient Romans saw one of these animals basking in the North African sun and called it crocodilus, meaning ``worm of the pebbles.'' The English word crocodile came from this name. Spaniards saw a similar reptile in the New World and called it el lagarto, meaning ``the lizard.'' From this came the word …

A wealth of experience

From our leaders

There is a recognition that our culture is in the process of continuous rapid shifting, with change being the only constant.

I had the privilege to attend the retirement of Gary Harder, long-term pastor of Toronto United Mennonite Church and, before that, long-term pastor of First Mennonite Church, Edmonton. His initial enthusiasm for ministry, together with the wisdom and experience he gained over the years, made him even more effective at the end of his formal career.

Mennonite Church Manitoba has a wonderful set of pastors, ranging in age from their early 20s to mid-60s, and a few in voluntary roles are even older. But we are in a period when …

Trevor Crowe relieved by news: Ankle X-rays negative, but he'll likely go on DL.

Byline: Stephanie Storm

Jul. 20--While the rest of the Aeros were out on the field taking batting practice Wednesday before facing the Altoona Curve at Canal Park, outfielder Trevor Crowe was on a table in the trainer's room, his left ankle heavily wrapped and elevated. Reading a magazine while snacking on a handful of candy, Crowe was in good spirits despite having been up until 4 a.m. Wednesday waiting to undergo X-rays at Akron General Medical Center.

"Overall, I can't help but be disappointed," said Crowe, who injured the ankle sliding into second on a stolen base in the 10th inning of Tuesday's win. "But right now I'm also very relieved. Initially …

Indian guards not to shoot on Bangladesh border

DHAKA, Bangladesh (AP) — Indian guards will no longer shoot people crossing the porous border from Bangladesh, Indian home minister said Saturday.

Dozens of Bangladeshis die each year after allegedly being shot by guards trying to stop smuggling across the 2,500-mile (4,000-kilometer) border. Bangladesh has long asked that guards instead arrest suspects or use rubber bullets.

India's border guards has now been asked not to fire at people crossing the 2,500-mile (4,000-kilometer) border, India's Home Minister Palaniappan …
