Jordan loses in Ga. primary

Rep. Wyche Fowler Jr. won Georgia's Democratic Senate primaryelection as final vote-counting early today narrowly gave him themajority needed to avoid a runoff with Hamilton Jordan, formerPresident Jimmy Carter's White House chief of staff.

But state Sen. Julian Bond, locked in a bitter contest for theDemocratic nomination for Fowler's House seat with fellowcivil-rights leader John Lewis, failed to win the majority needed foran outright victory.

In the Senate race, with 1,997 precincts of 2,360 reporting, or85 percent, Fowler won 262,683 votes or 50.7 percent to 161,686 forJordan, 31.2 percent.
